Chubby Chews

When your canine BFF is watching their figure
but really needs a treat!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup hot water

  • 2 tsp beef or chicken bouillon

  • 2 ½ cups whole wheat flour

  • ½ cup ground flax seed

  • ½ cup canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling, just plain old pumpkin puree)

  • 1 egg

  • ¼ cup rolled oats (optional)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350F

  2. Dissolve the bouillon in the hot water and set aside.

  3. Combine flour, flax, pumpkin, egg, and bouillon mixture – mix well and form into a dough ball.

  4. Sprinkle a little extra flour on a work surface and roll the dough out to about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.

  5. Optional – sprinkle the rolled oats on top of the rolled-out dough – roll over it one more time to squish the oats in well so they stick.

  6. Cut out shapes with a cookie cutter and transfer them to a parchment-lined cookie sheet. (You don’t have to use the parchment paper but man does it make clean up easy!)

  7. Bake for about 35-40ish minutes or until the cookies are completely dried out and fairly hard.

Notes:

  • Let cool completely before sharing with your pup

  • As long as they are baked until they are totally dry, they will keep for several weeks in an airtight container. (You can also put them in the freezer for up to 3 months.)

  • If your dog is watching their figure give these super sparingly and remember to log them in your dog’s daily food journal.

  • If you used a 1.5” cookie cutter, they are about 7 calories each.
